BRENTWOOD - Far East Contra Costa travelers may actually have something to look forward to Monday.
Friday was the last day of the week that eastbound drivers would be stuck at the light onto Sand Creek Road and Highway 4, which has caused stagnation for years.
The finishing touches were made Friday to the transfer of traffic on the new highway lanes so as of Saturday morning, a highway bridge cross the road and drivers can use offramps to exit the sandy cove.
Overlooking a line of traffic on Highway 4 that extends more than a mile north of Lone Tree Way, local political leaders and transportation officials gathered at the new bridge Friday afternoon to celebrate what they called a "milestone "in the $ 37
million project.
"I'm jacked. This is a big problem, not only for Brentwood, but for the entire eastern Contra Costa County," said Brentwood Mayor Bob Taylor. "It will serve the drivers of a much wider area and really open things up."
Stagnation backed drivers often thousands, especially during the evening rush hour, leaving them two blocks from home, but have to wait 15-20 minutes to make a left turn, he said.
"This provides a great value and improves the quality of life of many people, to get home to their families," said county Supervisor Mary Nejedly Piepho, of Discovery Bay.
Taylor added: "Instead of going in May (mph), drivers can go to 55."
The two-lane road has also caused security problems.
State Assemblywoman Joan Buchanan, D-San Ramon, said his office had "numerous" cuts of accidents on the road, while his district director, Iris Obregon, afraid to let their daughters drive that road at night.
"This will not only help people at home, but it is much safer," he said.
Engineers at Friday's event, said the project contractor would be the addition of the "finishing touches" to the switch overnight, including the addition of rail safety barrier, striping and road and traffic sign placement in Sand Creek.
When completed by the end of next year, Highway 4 have ramps and offramps at Sand Creek and Lone Tree four lanes south of Sand Creek.
A switch alignment of total traffic, which would include moving westward Traffic Highway 4 traffic variable message sign is planned for late October.
Authorities recently shuffled money around to add the construction of a second bridge underpass in Sand Creek, allowing the point of the highway where traffic funnels four lanes to two and move around a mile south, near San Jose Avenue.
Work is underway to incorporate the second bridge project in the project.

Through Variable Message Signs drivers get the route conditions which helps them a lot in highways.
