Hazle way to close for two months

A section of Hollywood Boulevard in Hazle Township closed for nearly two months from Wednesday to make improvements to the Airport Beltway project .

Mike Bernetski , the Department of Transportation construction manager for the Pennsylvania bypass project , said that the road is supposed to be closed from the ring road to the Fe Drive for 70 days , which would be until early November.

But Bernetski not think the road will be closed so long.

" We've done some of the work drain ," said Bernetski . "We're starting the containment (today) . Such work is included within 70 days, so I think that the road will be made before the 70 days are up. "

The teams have built a road connecting Fe Drive - where is the faith of the United Church of Christ - to connect with Moisey Drive, the road is a traffic signal in front of Walmart , and leads to wellness center Greater Hazleton Health Alliance.

Electronic variable message signs along the bypass road advise drivers will be closed on Wednesday .

" The rest of Hollywood Boulevard will remain open ," said Bernetski . "Companies continue to have access to the connector ring (road) we have built."

The Airport Beltway project involves widening of the 43 -year-old , the road to accommodate a turn lane , an additional lane on the ramp to State Route 93 , a new traffic signal at the intersection in Hazle Township Boulevard, and an update of the road and traffic signal near the Laurel mall .

" The third lane will be more or less go to the length of the road," said Bernetski . "This year , we made two box culverts , and have a lot of ways to do. 're Going to do the drainage work on the north side of the road this year , and on the south side of the road next year . us ' we've done a lot of drainage work on the south side . going to do some paving this year , but it will be the base or bonding layers . we are not going to make the final pavement until next year " .

Bernetski said crews built a "weave" for traffic to cross from the westbound lane of the highway. One lane in each direction has been established on the south side of the road this year .

"We tried to make it as easy as possible for people to use the road," said Bernetski .

From the Laurel Mall Route 93 , the road is already four lanes , but the access ramp to Route 93 to go north, or toward Interstate 81 , will change - the reason that the have shaving equipment down the edge of the Penn State University campus .

" From the mall to 93 will only resurfaced ," said Bernetski . "We are adding a second lane to the entrance ramp from Route 93 and the ramp to the ring to have a longer way of stacking . "

The project, which began in March , is scheduled for completion in November 2014 . The project was necessary because the number of fatal rear along two-lane road , as it was built in 1970. Many new businesses have been built along the road during its existence , including the Laurel Mall and Walmart.
